Job Description

This is a full-time, 40 hour/week positionworking as a member of the accounting team providing day-to-day management and oversight to all accounting and payroll related aspects of the organization.

Tasks Performed

  1. Accounting Systems:
    • Establishes/maintains accounting systems/accounts
  2. Financial Reports/Statements:
    • Prepares monthly and annual financial statements for each program and Communitas as a whole
    • Prepares/maintains accounts for annual external audit/review
    • Prepares reports for external agencies (various funding ministries) as required
    • Prepares budgets for project proposals
    • Prepares annual budget for individual programs and Communitas as a whole
  3. Assumes responsibility for developing and implementing accounting policies and procedures
  4. Gives day-to-day support and direction to all members of the accounting team
  5. Staff Work Performance:
    • Conducts Work Performance Reviews for all accounting and payroll staff, ensuring that performance standards are maintained
    • Advises RDs/SCs regarding manager performance issues as they relate to accounting and payroll
  6. Staff Training:
    • Coordinates new staff training for accounting and payroll staff as well as managers as it relates to accounting/payroll
    • Ensures staff are knowledgeable regarding current legislation
  7. Attends/participates in various meetings as required
  8. Other duties as necessary/assigned

Requirements

  • Prior accounting experience in the non-profit sector
  • Accounting designation (CMA, CGA, CA)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated teamwork, leadership and supervisory skills
  • Well developed planning, organizing, controlling and administrative skills
  • A philosophy of service that is compatible with the philosophy and values of Communitas
  • Ability to function independently, and frequently under pressure while managing multiple concurrent projects and deadlines including effectively managing emergency situations
  • Flexibility in working hours: Participation at meetings, conferences and other events may involve long workdays, and/or evening/weekend work
